Klein High Basketball Head Coach Darius Gatson Leads in Spring Texas |
Formerly of Klein ISD, Gatson brings an exciting new vision as the Bearkats' new head coach |

There is a new voice in the gym at Klein High School, and it comes with deep roots, a decade of preparation, and a bold vision for Bearkat basketball in Spring, Texas.
Darius Gatson Klein High coach is not just a title — it is the culmination of a lifelong connection to a district that shaped him from the ground up.
Gatson, who most recently served as an assistant at Klein Forest High School, was officially named the new head coach of the Klein ISD boys basketball program, succeeding longtime director Glenn Arnold following his retirement.
The hire carries real emotional weight for the Spring community.
Gatson attended school in Klein ISD from his earliest years, and he views this head coaching role as an opportunity to give back to the district that invested in him long before he ever stepped onto a college court.
His playing pedigree is no footnote — Gatson starred at Klein Forest under legendary head coach Cary Black, helping power the Eagles to the 2008 State Final Four with a dominant 33-4 campaign.
He went on to play collegiately at Trinity Valley Community College before suiting up for two seasons at Sam Houston State University, where he also earned academic honors.
Now the former rival school's star returns — not to beat the Bearkats, but to build them.
Gatson has made clear that his approach will center on relationships over rigid commands, describing himself as a coach who leads through trust and genuine connection with his players.
On the court, fans can expect an up-tempo, high-energy identity — one built on pushing pace offensively and swarming defensively with relentless effort.
The timing of this hire comes at a pivotal moment for the program.
The Bearkats posted a 19-15 record in 2025, captured the District 15-6A championship, and earned a playoff berth — giving Gatson a legitimate foundation to elevate rather than rebuild.
Returning senior guard Jaydon Smith, a versatile 6-foot-4 sharpshooter, headlines an experienced group poised to make noise in a competitive district.
Gatson's hiring also extends the well-documented coaching influence of Cary Black throughout Klein ISD, joining a growing network that includes prominent administrators and head coaches spread across the district's programs.
For Spring, Texas, this story is about far more than a coaching change.
It is a homecoming — and if Gatson's passion is any measure, the Bearkats' best chapter may be just getting started. |

this is exactly the kind of hire that keeps good coaches in the district instead of losing them somewhere else
the 2008 state final four team was so fun to watch. Glad that era is connected to what comes next
Sam Houston State guy. Solid. Curious how he handles the pressure of a 6A program as a first year head coach
mike_hBeing an assistant at Klein Forest probably prepared him more than people realize. He's seen a 6A environment up close for years, it's not like he's walking in blind.
jaydon smith at 6-4 with a new coach who likes to push pace could be really fun to watch this year
JasonParkRight? A long shooter who can handle the ball running in an up tempo system is tough to guard. If the supporting cast is decent this could be a really watchable team.
i remember that 2008 klein forest run, gatson was really good back then, cool to see him coaching now
EaglesFan99That 33-4 season was something else. Hard to believe that was almost 17 years ago. Glad he stuck around the area instead of chasing something elsewhere.
hope the up tempo style works in 15-6A, that district is no joke
Klein Forest star coming to coach Klein High is kind of wild but also really cool
Rachel T.Right? I thought the same thing at first. But honestly if anyone knows what it takes to compete in this district it's someone who played in it. Could actually be a big advantage.
always cool when someone comes back to the district that raised them, hope he does great things
Karen L.Agreed, and those coaches usually have something extra to prove. He knows the community, the families, the culture. That stuff matters more than people think.
been watching Klein basketball for 20 years. This hire feels right
long_time_bearkat20 years is a long time to watch. What's your read on the roster? Do you think they can make a deep run this season?
19-15 and a district title is a solid base to hand a new coach, he isnt walking into a mess
Mike_BearkatExactly, district champs and a playoff team already. Some new coaches have to spend two years just getting the roster right. Gatson gets to skip all that and actually compete right away.
this is awesome news
Jaydon Smith is going to go crazy with a coach who likes to push pace. That kid can shoot
JayFromKleinSeriously. A shooter like that in an up tempo system is going to be tough to guard. Defenses won't be able to set up against them.
hope the relationship stuff isn't just talk. Seen coaches say that before and then run kids off
skeptical_samFair point. Actions will tell the story pretty quick once practices start. Hopefully the kids feel the difference early on.
up tempo and swarming defense sounds fun to watch. Klein gym gets loud when the team is rolling
19 wins and a district title last year so he's not walking into a mess. No excuses now
my son plays JV and the kids are already hyped about coach Gatson. Good sign
Melissa D.That's honestly the best sign you can get. If the players are bought in before the first practice even happens you're already ahead of the curve.
Cary Black's fingerprints are literally all over Klein ISD at this point lol
waited a long time for something like this. Arnold had a good run but fresh energy is needed
love that he actually grew up here. Feels different when the coach has real ties to the community
SpringMom2024Agreed. You can tell when a hire is just filling a seat versus when someone actually cares about the place. This one feels like the latter.
let's go Bearkats!!
Dave K.Let's go!! About time we get some real excitement around this program again.
